Describe yourself in not more than 5 words

A. Diligent. Compassionate. Moderate. Adventurous. Humble.

Tell us more about your journey, how did you begin writing?

A. My earliest experiment with the written word was as a child. I would write poetry for my father who used to travel a lot. It was quite dreadful but it came from the heart 🙂 I started blogging and writing my first novel I Didn’t Expect To Be Expecting during my maternity break, when I was surrounded by diapers! That’s when the bug but me and I found my purpose in telling tales. Three books down, I’m so glad that during a time of upheaval w.r.t to life and career, I found what I was meant to do.

How to you balance work and personal life, considering so much is going on?

A. I won’t lie that it’s easy, especially with a child, but then what is?! At any point in time we seek stability yet the one factor that’s a constant is change. On the dreariest and most tiring of days, I use fitness and meditation to keep me sane. If you enjoy what you do, inspite of the most maddening circumstances, you’ll find your peace and you’ll find a way to make it happen. Having said that, if we don’t give ourselves adequate personal time, family time or peace of mind, there is bound to be tumult and stress. My simple mantra is to live in the moment and manage a day at a time.

Any tips to improving writing skills

A. Treat reading as a fuel to spark your imagination. It’s a great way to learn the power of words. Brush up on your vocabulary and grammar. They are important tools in your writing arsenal.  Also, write enough to understand how you write and to identify your strengths and your unique voice.

Your personal mantra for happiness?

A. Mindfulness and surrendering to the universe. We must realize that we can’t change much of what happens but what is in our control is how we react to our world and circumstances.

How can aspiring authors decide whether to opt for the regular publishing system or self-publish their work?

A. Focus on the story first. Finish writing it. Only then should you start thinking of publishers. There is no wrong or right way to publish. Your decision needs to be driven by what you seek to accomplish and what your personal goals are. It isn’t easy to get published so you can try both methods. Ofcourse traditional publishing carries with it an undeniable sense of pride and a charm but there is no stigma associated with self-publishing either. Many authors opt for it.

Is copyrighting the book necessary before the publishing process?

A. As per my knowledge, if you’re publishing traditionally your publisher will get you an ISBN number. It’s a unique identity for your book. Your contract will cover copyrights and other legalities. If self publishing, you will need to get an ISBN number but there are self publishing houses now that offer basic services like editing, printing, providing an ISBN number and listing on retail sites. There’s also KDP ( Kindle publishing)

There are many writers who aspire to become an author someday, what is the one thing that you would like to share with them?

A. Believe that it’s possible. With all your heart. Otherwise there is no point in expecting a half hearted endeavour to come to fruition.

What’s next in store for your readers?

A. I’ve just completed my fourth manuscript. This is the second installment for Kanpur Khoofiya Pvt Ltd and I can’t wait to get it to my publishers. I’ve also recently signed the contract for a film adaptation of my third book Excess Baggage and I’m eagerly waiting for that project to kick-off!

Any special message for the readers?

Whatever I write, across genres, is a reflection of our lives, filled with hope and humour and I would love to keep connecting with you through my words.
